Romantic comedies are the best genre
Hello readers
I had some trouble coming up with today’s issue. As seen in the previous issue, I was going to talk about stories that celebrate storytelling. However i discovered what i really meant was stories that celebrate imagination. It had been months since I read the books I wanted to talk about and thanks to the rapid rate at which i read and my goodreads goal, i had forgotten the majority of the plots.
Recounting the plots was seeming like it would warrant a full reread of like 4 books, which i have no time for. Thus the idea was scrapped.
But that’s all besides the point because i turned to my one comfort in life (this is a stretch) Romantic comedies 😁
•̩̩͙˚⁺‧. •̩̩͙˚⁺‧.˚ •̩̩͙ ✩. •̩̩͙˚⁺‧. •̩̩͙*˚⁺‧. ˚ *•̩̩͙ ✩.
I am nothing if not a romantic, and i’m so serious.
If you think deeply enough about it, romantic comedies are the best genre in everything. Books, comics, movies, tv shows, anime, k dramas, whatever other mediums there are.
i find myself reaching for a romance story anytime i’m exhausted. but not just any romance, a *romantic comedy*
it doesn’t even have to be equal parts romance and comedy, the imbalance sometimes is what makes it so appealing.
Why they are so good.
They’re easy to consume
i believe they are arguably the easiest genre of entertainment to consume, perhaps arguably second only to trashy reality TV. Think of other genres: fantasy? confusing for at least 5 chapters, sci fi? same thing, horror? scary, mystery? confusing. I can consume a romantic comedy in any state while i have to be in a certain mood for other genres. I know I sound silly but really think about it, other genres require so much brain power. This does not mean romcoms are inferior in any way to others. They are just superior. There’s a reason they’re so popular.
They’re relatable
No matter what stage in life you are at, i'm certain there is a rom com for you. Technically the same can be said for every genre but at least in a romcom you’ll be guaranteed a happy ending and a wholesome story! If you question whether there is *really* a movie for every situation you only have to turn to the collection of dying girl/boy falls in love books and movies that become very popular during the 2010s for some reason.
They’re fun
I’m so serious when i say that if you have something against romcoms you just hate fun. Like what is there to actively hate in the genre. If you think they last substance, you haven’t found the right one! A romcom in itsraw state is just an incomprehensible amount of joy. They are meant to be pure unbridled fun. I want to see every cliché trope possible! I want to see very silly characters actively ignore they’re falling in love! I want to escape into this story where i know everything is going to be alright because it’s all so obvious that’s not the case in mine.
Long story short i love love. It’s a beautiful thing and it deserves to be celebrated.
I will like to recommend some of my favorite romantic comedies across all the media i can think of.
Anime/Manga:
Kaguya sama love is war
I’m not going to talk much about this because all the convincing you need is in this video
Our main couple actively schemes to get the other to confess to them so they can begin dating. We follow the student council as well as a few other characters in their daily lives and “battles”. The show is extremely funny and is currently releasing weekly episodes for season 3.
Love is hard for an otaku
This follows our protagonist narumi as she reconnects with an old friend, hirotaka at her new workplace. however she’s not excited to see him because he’s the only person that knows she’s a huge nerd(an otaku). It follows the main cast of 4 as they go about their every day lives and surprise surprise narumi and hirotaka falling in love . the other two main characters have a,ready been dating for many years and are extremely funny. there’s currently one season and 3 special episodes available, i don’t think they’ll be making another season but the manga recently concluded and concluded the story.
Monthly girls nozaki kun
This show follows chiyo who finally works up the courage to confess to her crush, nozaki kun. but him, oblivious to what is happening, gives her an autograph mistakening her as a fan of his manga. she begins helping him with his manga after school and shenanigans ensue with her friends and his. i must say i don’t think there will ever be romantic development with chiyo and nozaki, as he’s a bit too obsessed with his manga even though he does care about her. the side couples however, have potential. the entire main cast is very funny jokes never fail to land. it’s one of the funniest animes i’ve watched and my personal favorite (though it’s by no means the best).
Books
This book is an ode to romcoms everywhere while simultaneously telling a love story we know all too well, the boy next door. The characters are all very likable and this book handles the tropes it takes on very well,(and it takes on a lot ) You can tell the author respects the genre as you spot a quote from an iconic room movie at the start of every chapter. this is probably my favorite romantic comedy book i’ve ever read, though i am biased as it also references taylor swift a lot. anyways i think anyone can enjoy it and i’ve been recommending it to all my friends. link to my goodreads review.
Academic rivals to lovers. Enough said
Movies
I’m not going to talk about this too much as i plan on dedicating an issue to this in the future but this movie is brilliant okay. its another academic rivals to lovers story. it follows two high school seniors for most of the latter half of the school year. it focuses on our two protagonists, lona and bennett, as they navigate the debate year, college admissions and their blossoming relationship. This movie gives voice to how ridiculous the college admissions are as you see people that have been idolizing and preparing to go to certain schools since they graduated middle school. i don’t know how to explain it but it feels more real than some of the other high school romcoms. remember these are recommendations personal to ME. so these are media i dont think people are talking about enough. link to letterbox review.
This deserves classic romcom status. it has this whimsical ridiculous feel that the classic 90s and 00s romcoms had and that’s like the golden age of romcoms. its just so utterly ridiculous, it wouldn’t happen anywhere else. forgive me for saying it but its just white people doing white people things, but its one of my favorites. its very well done, the characters are lovable, their romance is adorable and its just a barrel of fun. link to letterbox review
This movie is the funniest out of the three. the main character was so utterly ridiculous and i got so much second hand embarrassment (in a good way?) watching it. but at the same time it was just so adorable. the auction of the scarf was very #cinema to me.
WEBTOON
Side Note: i only recently got into webtoons but its been fun so far. they’re really just colorized mangas for the most part but i’m having fun.
Seasons of blossom
I literally caught up with this yesterday. its so good, bonus points because you can finish the first season in like an hour, its just 30 chapters. its beyond adorable and fake dating. it was also very funny, the main male lead was an icon. i dont want to give anything away, go read it now. It was also a tall girl and short boy troupe.
K-drama
A business proposal
Follows Shin ha-ri after she goes on a blind date with the president of the company she works at and chaos ensues after. It also follows a very cute side story with the best friends of the main couple. I think alone can watch it, its so funny and he kept doing this the entire time.
Needless to say, true love still exists.
Anyways that’s all i have to say for this week… whoever you are that’s reading.
Note: im deciding that ill operate like a book tuber with at least 2 uploads a month, one being a wrap up and the rest being whatever i feel like at the time. stay tuned for more chaos
