June wrap up

Hello avid readers,

It’s been a minute

I had exams in June so I had no time to write😭

So I’ll be doing a simple wrap up and this time next week (hopefully) I’ll have a regular article out… as well as my July wrap-up because the month is drawing to an end.

I have recently gone on my summer holidays and found that the IB does not stop plaguing one even after leaving the school premises.

Anyways jumping right into it.

Books

Because of the aforementioned exams, I read a grand total of two books

*APPLAUSE*

Namely, the 4th and 5th mortal instruments books, and I’ll cut right to the chase

City of Fallen Angels

I think it’s time to admit that I do not know why most of these are called whatever they are. I do not recall any fallen angels in this book.

Anyways I had a fun time reading this. Following the trend from the last book, I actually liked Jace in this. (maybe it says something about him that I only like him when he is suffering and cannot be annoying). He just can’t catch a break.

Essentially, Lilith, our big bad villain, binds Jace and Sebastian (the very creepy demon brother of Clary) to each other. The reasoning behind this is when he was brought back to life in the third book, Clary created an imbalance of some sort. So since the heavens took back a damned soul, so can hell? Very confusing.

Anyhow Simon has two girlfriends, which is very silly of him.  They find out and both dump him. The boyfriend that turned Maia into a werewolf (Jordan) joins the gang and he and Maia gradually start talking again.

Simon also tries to tell his mum about his current condition (being a vampire) but she rejects him and prays him away so he wiped her memory sort of. Simon can’t catch a break because he ended up starving to the point of having to drink this little girl’s blood 😭. Maureen (his victim) becomes an evil vampire.

Anyways Lilith’s super evil plan is to raise Sebastian and she manages to get Simon, Clary, and Jace to where she’s keeping him. She is dispelled (greater demons don’t really die) because of the mark of Cain that Simon bears.

All is well! ...Until they leave Jace on the roof with Sebastian’s body and both disappear 💀. It was so comically predictable.

Apart from the main conflict, Magnus and Alec continued their never-ending drama of Magnus being immortal and Alec not being.  I recently learned that the books were meant to stop after the third one but she decided to make three more, so a separate trilogy.

I will say this book was better written than the previous three.

City of Lost Souls

Technically the lost soul in this book could be Jace as he’s being controlled  (again). Anyways, this book was genuinely good! Like I was a bit gagged might I say.

As we know Jace is under the influence of Sebastian as they are still connected by the mark of Lilith from the previous installment.

As a result, we get a very strange version of Jace that is both him and not him... Sebastian takes him along to do his evil bidding and even when they find them he reveals he can't be hurt without it hurting Jace.

Since Sebastian wants nothing more than to accomplish his evil plan with his sister by his side, Clary has the genius idea of going with him to spy and report back to Simon secretly.

Team Evil is formed! (for some reason this book has several little groups all kind of doing their own thing). Team evil comprises of Jace - the brainwashed hero, Clary - our clearly confused heroine and Sebastian our villain.

For most of their sections in this book, Clary and Jace are just going to destination wedding spots and she's *trying* to spy on them. I can't blame her though, Sebastian wasn't up to that much.

Now on to Team good

Magnus, Alec, Isabelle, and Simon are brainstorming ways to sever the bond between Jace and Sebastian. They realize no mortal blade can do it and try summoning a demon (which turns out to be very hilarious). The demon doesn’t really help them and steals some memories but Simon has the genius idea of summoning Raziel since he has the mark of Cain. (I sound sarcastic but I'm not, Simon is actually very smart). Raziel does appear and is quite annoyed, he would have killed Simon instantly if not for the mark. He decides to give him Glorious, a sword filled with heavenly fire in exchange for removing the mark of Cain.  Jordan and Maia also do some fun stuff that is not relevant, same with Jocelyn and Luke

*PAUCE*

Jocelyn has been so annoying these past few books. she keeps trying to break up Jace and clary and she’s so hostile to him. She’s always comparing her and valentine to them, I don’t even care about Jace and Clary like that but it was so sick.

Sebastian is an excellent villain as far as I’m concerned. His plan was very sick and twisted.

He’s also very sick generally, when Clary obviously betrayed him he was looking like he was about to rape her, I for one was terrified.

Long story short, Clary stabs Jace with Glorious which severs the bond between him and Seb. Sebastian escapes somehow and the glorious fire in the sword transfers to Jace barely not killing him.

The day is saved!

Side note: Isabelle is lovesick in this book which is entertaining but Alec and Magnus break up at the end which was devastating.

I had a blast reading this, to be honest.

Moving on...

What did I watch

Spy x family

I started reading the manga the day the anime debuted so I already know everything that's happening and I will for quite a while. But this anime is hilarious and all the characters are so lovable. I'm having a blast watching it and I think everyone should tune in.

Kaguya-sama

Season 3 of this anime kicked off at the start of the spring/summer anime season(idk) and it was EXCELLENT. I expected them to continue our usual shenanigans but I was so wrong. Tensions were high, and things were happening! I was so flabbergasted. The season finale was so beautiful that I literally cried. I think Shirogane and Kaguya’s love is just something so deeply beautiful and I will never be the same. My life is changed!

Frozen 2

I finally watched frozen 2 after nearly 3 years. A lot of people hate this movie, but I had a bit of fun. I had absolutely no thoughts or expectations going into it so I had no basis to be disappointed. I think because it followed the well-loved Frozen makes it look worse than it really was. It was very pretty, like the animation was absolutely gorgeous and everything was so well done. The plot of the movie was very meh?

Elsa hears voice, Elsa follows voice, Elsa is looking for the fifth spirit thing. She gets there and realizes she is the spirit? SHE DIES?

Also, Anna was very odd in this movie, she was just there to follow Elsa around and it was ridiculous. She was acting like a mother. The dynamic around the sisters felt ingenue and stiff I don’t know.

This is not an original thought, but the lack of a villain in this is really obvious. The movie is just happening in front of us, it has no aim or central message.

Kristoff was just trying to propose to Anna the entire movie which, forgive me, is a very boring subplot.  Speaking of subplots the “mystery” of the movie was really just there. Like okay, their grandfather was a piece of shit… and? why should I care.

Olaf temporarily dying was ridiculous seeing as they did that entire thing in the first movie. Olaf as a character was a bit fun when he wasn’t cracking jokes, I found it quite funny how he was so confused by the complexity of life.

I think the songs don’t hit as hard as in the first movie. The best song was definitely Into the Unknown, everything else was forgettable except for Kristoff’s song about being lost in the woods.

It's a bad sequel definitely but I had a little bit of fun

They should just have given Anna fire powers.

Save the last dance

EXCELLENT

This is a brilliant movie. I’m not sure whether it counts as a rom-com or not but I love this movie I don’t care.

Derek is so attractive

Like I don’t know what they put in the movie but tell me why I was giggling and rolling around.

I think her dancing was cool and I don’t know why people hated it

I think everyone should watch this, I will continue to recommend it.

Are you the one?

This show is so deeply unserious, I love it. I think the fact that the season 5 cast was the only cast to lose was hilarious. This show generally is hilarious. They are all clinically insane

The old guard

I watched this because some of my friends STRONGLY  recommended it as the most excellent thing ever. It is not the best movie to ever be made but it was engaging enough.

The concept in itself is very cool, a group of immortals on the run from the government. Some parts of this felt like peak fiction, like when they talked about how their friend was thrown into the ocean in a chained coffin to drown again and again. That's so brutal that it feels like a Greek myth. I love it, Picasso. I think the wardrobe and general aesthetic of this movie could have been better, it would be a much cooler movie with a bigger budget. I don’t wish to speak about this at length but this was alright.

That brings us to the end of my June wrap-up issue.
